Ubisoft, a well-known French publisher, is reportedly working on a new battle royale game designed to compete directly with Apex Legends. According to Insider Gaming, this project, which goes by the codename “Scout,” bears such close resemblance to Respawn and EA’s successful title that its initial artwork once served as a thumbnail for the project. Additionally, there are claims of characters in “Scout” that mirror those found in Apex Legends. This game has been under development for quite some time now.
The strategy seems to be rooted in the belief that Ubisoft can draw players away from Apex Legends, especially since the latter has experienced a dip in revenue, as Electronic Arts itself has acknowledged. A source mentioned, “The aim appears to be to attract players as Apex’s numbers decline, with Ubisoft executives seeing an opportunity to slide into the market with another hero-based battle royale.”
This venture isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at tapping into the free-to-play battle royale market. They previously launched Hyperscape in 2020, which unfortunately didn’t last beyond 18 months. Recently, Ubisoft also decided to pull the plug on their free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends can anticipate a refreshed experience with the upcoming release of its 2.0 version, which is expected sometime after April 2026.
