Guess what? The Korea-based studio, Pixelity, is diving headfirst into the world of XR gaming with a new project that’s sure to excite anime enthusiasts everywhere. They’re working on a game inspired by the iconic ’90s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. If you grew up on this series or discovered it later, you know it’s a big deal.
In an exciting blog update, Pixelity revealed they’ve secured an official licensing agreement with Japan’s Studio Khara to develop this XR game in three thrilling parts. The storyline will draw from all 26 episodes of the original anime, with the first chapter expected to launch by 2026.
To all the hardcore Evangelion fans out there (my fellow devotees), this anime needs no introduction. Back in the ’90s, it burst onto the scene in Japan, sparking a huge anime renaissance and leaving a lasting legacy that inspired countless other series.
The captivating tale is set in the year 2015, well ahead of its 1995 release. It follows the journey of teenager Shinji Ikari, who is chosen to pilot the immense humanoid machines, the Evangelions. These machines are humanity’s final stand against the enigmatic Angels threatening the futuristic city of Tokyo-3.
Even though Pixelity is keeping tight-lipped about the specific platforms for the game, they have shared some juicy details. Expect to be transported into a vivid XR world where you’ll explore various locations, reliving the anime’s timeline through missions and adrenaline-pumping battles.
The studio teases an interactive experience where players team up with familiar Evangelion characters, promising fans an engaging mix of collaboration and action-adventure fun. Sounds like a dream come true for fans, doesn’t it?
Since Pixelity’s inception in 2017, they’ve carved out a niche in the VR game space with titles like Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). They’re also busy crafting two more VR experiences, The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
Now, while Evangelion-themed VR thrill rides aren’t entirely new, this upcoming project marks the first official at-home game adaptation for the series. Some of you might remember the exhilarating Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls, launched by Bandai Namco-backed Project i Can in 2017, which took Shinjuku, Japan by storm before disappearing.
