Microsoft is rolling out an update for Windows 11 that promises significant improvements to the way Task Manager tracks CPU usage, bringing it in line with popular third-party tools.
Enhanced CPU Monitoring with Windows 11 Update May Lessen the Need for Third-Party Programs
In a move that suggests Microsoft has been listening to user feedback, they’re set to revamp how Task Manager displays CPU usage. Historically, Task Manager’s performance metrics have lagged behind those of specialized third-party tools. With the new update, Microsoft will implement a fresh approach to calculating CPU utilization, mirroring industry standards found in other utilities. Essentially, Task Manager is about to become much more competitive in performance monitoring.
Here’s what Microsoft has to say about the change: “We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools.”
Though specifics on the revised calculation method remain under wraps, what’s clear is that this unification of metrics across the Processes, Performance, and Users pages will bring the figures Task Manager reports closer to those seen in third-party applications. Essentially, users might find they no longer need to rely on options like HWINFO for precise CPU readings. However, the full impact of this update will become evident only once it officially launches.
For those who favor the existing calculation method, Microsoft is offering a compromise. There’ll be a new optional column labeled CPU Utility in the "Details" tab, facilitating backward compatibility for those who prefer it. Currently, these updates are part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360, bundled in the 24H2 update. Users will notice these changes as they progressively roll out, underscoring Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing user experience.
