Resident Evil Requiem is kind of… mind-blowing if you ask me. It’s like the series is finally looking back at where it came from, but not just the big hits. I’m talking the lesser-known stuff too. Grace Ashcroft? Yeah, she’s got this link with her mom Alyssa from Resident Evil Outbreak. And oh boy, back to Raccoon City! Thirty years after they blew it up at the end of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis! Crazy, right? There’s a whole lot of story potential there, but… are they just ignoring the big cliffhangers?
Like, remember how Resident Evil Village left us hanging with Chris Redfield and the whole BSAA in Europe thing? It seems they’re just like, “whatever” to that plot. Capcom wasn’t joking about moving on from the ‘Winters Saga.’ Seven and Village might end up as important, yet weirdly sidelined, chunks of the story. Anyone else think they’re letting those stories fade away a bit too soon?
So, Ethan Winters. That guy! Resident Evil 7 kind of took a split with fans by throwing him in there. He’s supposed to be an everyman, someone we could all kind of… become? Didn’t really have a face, no bravado, just someone you’d blend into a crowd with. But here’s the catch, Resident Evil is usually about these fearless combat-trained heroes. Until he dies in the game—then the story really lifts off. It’s a mix of the brilliant and the “why bother?”
The direction with Requiem has me feeling all sorts of ways. Without room for Rosemary or Mia in the new storyline, does it mean those past stories are kinda tossed aside? What do you think? They bring this nostalgia trip with Requiem, which is nice, I guess. New characters like Grace Ashcroft make it seem Capcom wants her to become a legacy deal, but it’s not like she’s Leon’s kid or anything. That would be wild!
Going back to Raccoon City is gutsy for sure. We’ll just have to see if the story backs it up. But with seven and Village being kinda pushed into the background, it’s like… where does it all fit now?
