Preview of Sea of Remnants: Blending Sea of Thieves Piracy with Persona 5’s Style – Does It Offer More Than Just Looks?

Sure, here’s a rewritten version of the article in a more natural, raw style:

—

Okay, so I spent like, what, six hours with this pirate RPG, Sea of Remnants. And let me tell you, I’ve got a bunch of questions banging around in my head now. It’s like, is this thing gonna actually work when it’s done? The combat? Totally barebones. Vendors and upgrades? Felt like walking through a maze in an MMO. And the story? I mean, without English voice acting or reliable subtitles, half the time I didn’t know what was going on. But – and it’s a big but – the style is just off the charts. Like, I couldn’t tear my eyes away. Reminded me of Persona 5, with all the cartoonish vibes and insane animations. I was lost, yet grinning like an idiot. It’s such an early version I played, who knows if they’ll get it polished by 2026 or whatever, but man, it’s already got that unique charm. Definitely gonna keep tabs on this one.

So, quick note before diving into the good and the bad about my time with Sea of Remnants – it’s super early, okay? Unfinished with all sorts of bugs. Played half-baked stuff before, but this? Felt like I wandered onto a construction site. Menus and dialogue with placeholder text, crashes galore, and honestly, if you’re not a Mandarin speaker, good luck understanding a thing. Seriously, keep all this mess in mind if you check out the video.

Now, onto what I do know. Sea of Remnants is kinda like Sea of Thieves – lots of open sea exploring, pirate crew stuff. But then it throws in weird stuff like turn-based combat onshore and some RPG/MMO mechanics. I wasn’t even sure what genre cocktail they’re going for. Every 30 minutes, bam! Another curveball. Oh, and FYI, there are, like, hundreds of companions you can recruit. Mind you, I didn’t see any multiplayer action in this demo, but apparently, it’s gonna be online where you chill with other pirate captains.

Honestly, the ideas they threw in were hard to grasp. The turn-based combat was cool to look at, but felt oversimplified – maybe ’cause it’s an early bit, or just not finished yet. Hope they beef this up to the level of stuff like Clair Obscur or Like A Dragon someday. Right now, it’s more like a watered-down Persona 5.

But hey, unfinished or not, Sea of Remnants kept me hooked. Those puppet characters, even with their wooden expressions, packed a ton of personality. Their goofy animations? Cracked me up. Yeah, it’s all pirates, but with a twist. Like, fighting a giant ape boss, getting shipwrecked by a vengeful monkey? Didn’t see that coming. I still have no clue what the final game vibe will be, with all the inventory and dialogue mess, but boring? Nope. Quite the opposite, honestly.

What’s refreshing is the totally unique setting. While there’s typical pirate antics, you also have nutty stuff like finding the moon underwater or memory-lost marionettes popping back on Orbtopia. The whole place is graffiti-clad, punkish – and all these characters feel like teens playing hooky. Super weird but it worked.

The big question? Can this crazy cool-looking game with its jumble of ideas come together in a coherent way? After all this time with it, no clue yet. But honestly, it’s interesting enough to keep me curious. Gotta wait longer to see if they nail the tech and online stuff. Meanwhile, I can see some vision forming – punk aesthetics, arty style mashed with wild ship battles and slower-paced ground combat. Plus, who doesn’t want more pirate adventures? This silly take could be a breath of fresh air. But how’ll they make multiplayer work with turn-based stuff? Beats me, but hey, if it happens, great – or at least, it’ll be something new.
