Development on the third installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series is proceeding smoothly, without any major bumps in the road so far. Although there’s still no set date for its release, fans might not have to wait too long. Drawing from Square Enix’s past schedules, it’s possible we could see the concluding chapter hit the shelves as early as 2027.
Square Enix seems pleased with the progress of this final game, as confirmed by a senior official during a recent update about the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth sequel. The journey towards creating this epic conclusion kicked off around June 2022 in pre-production. Once Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth hit the stores in February 2024, it wasn’t long before the team dove headfirst into full production for the next part. Since then, updates from Square Enix have been sporadic but keep fans in the loop about this highly anticipated AAA RPG.
In the latest wave of updates, Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi had a chat with Famitsu, a popular Japanese publication, discussing where things stand with the project. Hamaguchi expressed his satisfaction with the team’s current standing, noting that development is going “very well.” He emphasized that the project remains on schedule and hasn’t faced any major issues yet, although he remains cautious about announcing a precise release date.
Furthermore, Kitase noted in the same interview that the storyline for Part 3 was wrapped up back in 2024. Hamaguchi had previously mentioned in November 2024 that the story concept was finalized by Square Enix back then. Reflecting on the finished storyboard, Kitase shared his contentment, anticipating fans will be thrilled with the outcome, though he kept specifics under wraps.
The first chapter of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake took approximately five years to develop after pre-production. However, the sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, was completed in about four years. This expedited timeline was possible because Square Enix could reuse some of the assets from the first remake. The only significant hurdle was the global pandemic, which caused delays in 2020.
Looking ahead, we can anticipate the third part of the trilogy could launch as soon as 2027. Like its predecessors, it’s expected to be a PlayStation exclusive initially, before expanding to PC and other possible platforms. The second game in the series, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, just became available on PC today, January 23, marking its multi-platform debut.
