Fresh from his role reprisal, Jim Carrey has once again donned the guise of the mustachioed, bald antagonist Dr. Robotnik in Sonic 3. Remarkably, he’s already hinted at being open to the idea of jumping back in for future Sonic installments, like Sonic 4, as long as the proposed concept strikes him as enjoyable.
This development follows Carrey’s return to the spotlight for Sonic 3, effectively pulling himself out of retirement. On the red carpet, notorious for his humor, he quipped that he’d only come back if a script, divinely inscribed in golden ink, managed to captivate him with its significance. However, he also candidly admitted that practicality played a role, saying, “I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
During a chat with the Japanese YouTube channel Cinema Today, Carrey expressed his openness to being part of more Sonic movies. He remarked, “I’m definitely open. I’m open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea, and if I go, ‘that sounds fun,’ then I’ll do it. I don’t feel locked to anything in life, unless it’s something that interests me.”
He went on to share his appreciation for the team behind the movies, expressing, “I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans. There’s a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and the fans jump in and say, ‘how about if you do this?’ They’ve been super helpful. I think we’re all making this movie together.”
At the beginning of the interview, Carrey humorously shared that he “power-rests between projects” while pulling a comical face, reminiscent of his Grinch days. While it may not top my unofficial ‘funny face’ leaderboard, it’s a solid contender, complete with an amusing sound. I’d give it an 8 out of 10.
